Welcome to the new reality of remote working!

To counter the exponential growth of COVID-19, the corporate world has embraced a great experiment: remote working. While “working from home” has been used on-and-off for years, this marks the first time that the bulk of commercial enterprises has shifted to an online presence. It’s a jarring shift, but one that can be quite productive if the right tools are in place.

What tools?

Well, if you’re going to work collaboratively while physically distant, you’ll need ample communication and co-working tools to work productively. Many of them you may already use while in the office!

Video Tools

When remotely working, video and video conferencing tools are critical. These can serve as check-ins for your team, as ways to interview potential new hires (yes, you can hire during these times), or for working with a client.

The most used video services are Zoom and Google Meet.

Zoom has recently grabbed attention worldwide as an attractive, simple option. The free version allows for 40 minutes of uninterrupted video conferencing for up to 100 participants.

Google Meet (formerly Google Hangouts) requires a G Suite account. If your business already uses G Suite, you’re in luck! You can use Meet immediately.

Communication Tools

You’re going to need messaging when working remotely (and email isn’t going to cut it). We are in love (along with everyone else) with Slack—a messaging app that allows your organization to create different channels for unique topics. It’s indispensable.

Lastly, we’d like to draw attention to Google Drive, under which Google Docs lives. It allows for collaborative writing and editing (we’re writing this article on Docs right now). For remote working, it’s a must.
